The Silk Road is a network of over 4,000 miles of trade routes between the Pacific and the Mediterranean. Sri Lanka, an island rich in gems and spices, dominated trade on the maritime Silk Road. This exposed them to many cultures and so they became a land with many names.

The first name was Lanka, which means island. The Persians referred to it as Sarandīb, which is the etymological root of the word serendipity. The Portuguese called it Ceilão, which was a term used to describe the Tamil, who were indigenous to the island. The Arabs also called it Saheelan - quite possibly coming from ahlan wa sahlan - a greeting that, at its roots, means “You’re among family, and you’re in safe territory.” From Saheelan came the name used for Sri Lanka across Europe - Selan, Selon, or Ceylon. When Britain colonized the island, they made Ceylon the official name. In 1972, the name changed to Sri Lanka, meaning Resplendent Island.
